Two weeks ago, on Aug. 22, the Saints brought home another victory against our long-standing rivals, the UMS bulldogs. The historic win marks the third game in a row that St. Paul’s has been victorious over the (Crichton) Bulldogs.  

I am grateful to be able to describe the evening in full detail from the visitors’ section of Cooper Stadium where enthralled students were cheering on the Saints to victory alongside the band. The visitors’ section was brimming with SPS pride as many of our female students (including myself) came dressed in cheer uniforms and even some practice jerseys. The front row consisted of a few guys whose torsos were covered with blue paint and white letters spelling out “S-A-I-N-T-S.” Among the front of the visitors’ section, a megaphone was passed around and became the catalyst for many a chant. Additionally, the entire section of the bleachers became ensconced in student-provided baby powder, creating a smoke-like effect after touchdowns.  

I had the privilege of discussing the details of the game with Assistant Coach Ryne Baxter.  

When asked about important plays during the game, Baxter responded, “Two plays that come to mind are the long touchdown pass from Hayden to Parker to tie the game at 21-21 and regain the momentum. The second play would be Tank’s sack in the fourth quarter that knocked the quarterback’s helmet off and knocked UMS out of field goal range to possibly take the lead and get us into overtime. The stadium echoed the plays with supportive yelling, chanting and cheering, led on by our wonderful cheerleaders.” 

To continue, Baxter also discussed what he enjoys most about coaching. “I love the relationships we get to build with our players. I have taught most of the kids since they were at the lower school. It is special to get to watch them grow up and mature into the young men they are today.”
